In Sitka at the local US Forest Service office, the US flag was flown in the upside-down “distress” position on Monday, in violation of the US Flag Code.
The building, on Halibut Point Road, houses administrative offices of the Tongass National Forest and the Sitka Ranger District.
That Forest Service office isn’t the first federal office to do so. In February, upside-down flags were posted all over Sitka at federal sites, and at City Hall and the airpot.
That month, an upside-down flag was flown outside the State Department for a brief period, before it was reported and authorities corrected it.
Also in February, an upside-down flag was displayed at Yosemite National Park on El Capitan, protesting the Trump budget cuts that impacted some Park Service workers. The National Park Service acknowledged that it was unauthorized and the flag was removed, but that flag was not being flown next to the government offices, as it was in Sitka. The sudden appearance of these flags on federal buildings are likely an act of protest, but may also be the result of tampering, rather than a federal worker going rogue.
The US Flag Code says the flag should only be flown upside down as a signal of “dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.”
They know exactly who put the flag up like that; federal office buildings have cameras everywhere. For every camera you can see, there are at least two others you cannot.
Absolutely correct, Jeanette.
They choose not to check the cameras or report it because they are confident that no one is going to ask and each of them knows who did it.
Until someone in authority higher than them requests the evidence of who did it, these shenanigans will continue. And then if someone asks and they say they did not record it, at every single place, then we know once again that they are fully complicit and aware. Maybe a few more people need to be fired here and maybe they’re very important people that should not be fired, but we can’t tolerate bad behavior anymore.
I hope you are correct an that someone is held accountable.
To the USFS employee that ran it up …….hope you enjoyed your stay.
Catch the perps, put them in jail.
Another example of how Union State Employee’s spend their time, on our dime.
Well, if Trump can redefine “incursion” to suit his desires, why can’t the Forest Service do the same with “dire distress”?
Hey Dog,
You are lucky to still be here at MRAK, considering how you berated Suzanne over at my blog. Keep up the good work as my personal infiltrator and insurrectionist. Luv ya man. You can drop off a pint and a half on my doorstep. I don’t usually get to the door until the first dose wears off.
Democrats are the most pathetic people I have every seen.
Yeah it’s so pathetic how they want healthcare, and to end racism and equality. Republicans are a terrorist organization and needs to be destroyed. They are the scum of the earth.
No Kings: Your party skipped the primary, crowned Kamala without a single vote, and tried to erase Trump from the ballot when your legal warfare crashed and burned. That’s not democracy-that’s authoritarianism with a blue sticker.
These people are under distress NOW? Their “king auto-pen” forced people to take a poison toxin to keep their jobs, encouraged cities to be burned, pushed trans ideology, stole elections, imprisoned people who pointed out voter fraud, erased people off social media and fired from their jobs for speaking the truth, started the Ukraine and Israel wars, opened our borders to a massive invasion, inflated the dollar to final collapse, and so much more….
This is how a communist struggle session works: try to convince your victims that reality is opposite of what is real. Whoever hung that flag is obviously in that camp.
What is distressing is that we have so many Federal Workers in Sitka. After the Pulp Mill Closure, Don, Ted and Frank rushed in all kinds of federal spending into Sitka to offset the loss of Mill Jobs. The lunacy depicted in this story is the end result of that misguided thinking.
The US Flag Code is recommendations, not enforceable by law. The First Amendment is at work in Sitka
I suppose your interpretation of the first amendment includes all of the ignorant attitudes involving burning of the flag while waving foreign flags who also fled those derelict governments.
I remember you saying the same thing when the flag was flown upside down at the private residence of Samuel Alito…oh wait, that’s not what you said at all.
Find this person and fire him/ her
Totally unacceptable for a federal employee
This deserved to of been a daily occurrence under Biden and Obama but it wasn’t only because conservatives believe in what’s right and lawful
Whoever did this should be fired. You are entitled to an opinion, you are not however entitled to do as you wish with America’s Flag especially on government property.
It usually takes two people to hold and hoist the flag. The person in charge should make sure that two are present and it is being done properly and respectfully.
I fail to understand all of the fuss about a bit of bunting. A flag is an object to rally around not to worship as if it were a god
Not surprising that it is the forest service.
Jeanette, not all federal office buildings have cameras everywhere. I work in one that had no cameras, but sure is posted to say it does.
